HIV/AIDS Still Exists
What can you do in one minute…? Because on average last year nearly 10 people every minute were infected with HIV around the world.
The World
- As of May 2005, Worldwide more than 60 million people have been infected with HIV with 40 million people currently living with the virus.
- Globally, every 6 seconds on average someone becomes infected with HIV.
- Worldwide, there are an estimated 2.5 million children (under the age of 15) infected and girls and women now account for around 50% of all people living with HIV.
- During 2004, it is estimated that nearly 5 million people were newly infected and 3 million people died (including around 600,000 children) in the world.
The UK
- Up to March 2005, a total of around 70,000 people in the UK have been diagnosed with HIV.
- It is estimated that around 53,000 people are currently living with HIV, a third of which are not aware of it.
- So far, 21,280 people have been diagnosed with AIDS and around 13,145 have died in relation to it.
- During 2004, there were around 7,000 people newly diagnosed with HIV.
HIV affects local people too...
- Contrary to popular belief, HIV affects a wide range of local people.
- Between April 2004-March 2005, LASS supported 404 people affected by HIV and helped on average 10-14 new people every month.
- Of the people supported by LASS, 57% were Women; 55% were Black, 9% Asian; 70% were Heterosexual; and 35 were children under 18 (9%).
