LASS Trustees

This area of our site is for trustees and people who may be interested in becoming a trustee for LASS.

The Board of Trustees are the group of volunteers responsible for the overall governance of LASS. They work in partnership with the paid staff, who are responsible for day-to-day operational management.

This is an extremely rewarding volunteer opportunity, which is also very challenging. Trustees have to learn something about financial systems, health and safety, conflicts of interest, charity law, strategic planning, diversity, fundraising, commissioning and contracts and many other aspects of running an effective charity. Trustees are not expected to be experts in all of these areas but do need to know enough to know when to call the experts in.

There has been a growing realisation in recent years of the need to support trustees so that they can do their job well. Hence in 2006 National Occupational Standards (NOS) for trustees were developed. These are a nationally-agreed 'official' standard to develop skills and knowledge as a trustee. They:

As part of a Governance Review, from 2007 all trustees of LASS have committed to working through the NOS. To make the process as accessible as possible for existing trustees and for people who may be interested in joining the Board, we have put the documents and exercises required to complete the NOS on this section of our site.
